This book is about an American girl who is one day sucked up by a mystic cosmic force into the space and dumped in China in the sixteenth century. Then she is kidnapped and sold to a whorehouse on a boat, but luckily, since she can sing modern pop song and dance modern dance, which is so special and never seen by the ancient Chinese, she gets special treatment and doesn't need to have sex with patrons. She only sings and dances to entertain them. Soon she is delivered by a kungfu girl whom she made the acquaintance before the kidnapping. When she and the girl get to Yangchow, a big city in the south, she is taken to the palace at the order of the emperor who needs young girls to replace old ones. The emperor likes her and wants to marry her as an imperial concubine, but the tradition forbids a foreign girl to marry the emperor. So at the request of the head eunuch, she is given to be his wife. Sometimes later, the eunuch offends the emperor and is put in prison. According to the law, his wife, the girl, must be exiled to a remote place. On the way there, she goes through weird experiences, such as seeing seomeone driving corpses back to their homes, and the ceremony of a dead boy marring a dead girl, and other weird customs in ancient China. As she is so beautiful, all the families, where she takes her lodging, want her to be the wife of their sons. She has to think of some ways to escape. Then she disguises herself to be a boy, but when girls see her in boy's disguise, they all fall in love with her. After learning the truth, they have to let her go. Then the emperor pardons the head eunuch and he is released from the prison. The eunuch wants to have the girl back and send notice to all places in China. The girl does not want to go back to live with a eunuch, and so she goes here and there to avoid being found. But at last she is found and taken back to the capital. She is summoned to the palace as the emperor wants to know how she lives outside the capital. At that time, she is again sucked into the space and dumped back in America, but twenty years earlier than the actual time she lives in. She was not born yet. She goes to her home, but her mother does not recognize her as the mother is still young herself and does not have a child yet. Now what should the girl do?
